our little slice of heaven

Our Story

Mama's Place opened on Beach Drive in 2024 with one idea: feed folks the way Mama feeds her own family. Hot, homemade, and plenty of it.

a little restaurant, a big family

“Come join our little family.”

That's how Mama says it, and she means it. Mama's Place is a small Southern country kitchen in Calabash where the coffee's on, the biscuits are coming out of the oven, and somebody's going to ask how your mama's doing.

We serve breakfast and lunch six days a week: country fried steak with real gravy, hamburger steak, collards and green beans off the steam table, Southern and City burgers, Carolina hot dogs, and a dessert case Mama refills every single day. It's a women-owned, family-run place, and every plate goes out the way she'd want it served at her own table.

As Mama told one first-timer: “We want our customers to become part of our family with their bellies full and happy.”

Clayton & the Crew

Mama calls them “the kids,” and they're the heart of the place: on the flat-top, at the counter, and refilling your sweet tea before you ask.

Reviewers name them all the time: Star, Nicole, and the whole crew. When Mama had to step away for eye surgery this fall, Clayton and the kids kept the grill hot and the doors open, and hundreds of y'all showed up on Facebook to say you'd be praying. That's the kind of place this is.

Saturdays, Mama sometimes takes the day off and lets the kids run the show. Come see what they cook up.

How Mama Does It

Homemade, for real

Mama's own chicken salad, plus cakes, pies, and puddings baked right here. Her coconut cream pie starts as a bowl of custard and ends up under a pile of toasted coconut.

Plates that don't skimp

Folks say it best: “You get your money's worth.” Every hot plate comes with real sides and a biscuit, at prices regular people can afford.

Everybody's family

Regulars, beach visitors, and first-timers all get the same welcome. We've celebrated birthdays in this dining room and passed out free cake straight from the case.
